Voodoo School of Comedy – Sketch Writing

Voodoo School Of Comedy - Sketch Writing

Announcing the Voodoo's new Sketch Comedy writing program! For those students who always wanted to dig a little deeper into their writing and performance! Our new sketch comedy program is designed so that writing and performance go hand in hand, taking students from the fundamentals of comedy writing all the way through creating and producing an original sketch comedy revue at the Voodoo Comedy Theater!

This is an intro level sketch class that promises to be fun, energetic and geared towards getting you writing and creating. It is tailored towards students with little writing experience or writer/performers looking for an outlet to explore, create and refresh their skills.

Over an eight-week period, students will learn to generate material, construct comic premises and will write a variety of comedic scenes and monologues ranging from 3 to 5 minutes in length.

Through class exercises, interactive readings, individual and team writing prompts and improvisation, students will discover the fundamental principles of comedy sketch writing and the thrill of crafting original, funny material.

By the end of class, students will have developed a portfolio of sketches and will be capable of writing great sketch with others or on their own. The class will culminate in a graduation show performance at The Voodoo Comedy Playhouse for friends and family.

Maximum of 16 participants per class. Pre-requisite: Basics Level Improv or approval meeting with Instructor

Taking the student’s comedy writing and performance to the next level, Level 2 builds on the fundamentals learned in Level 1 and allows us to explore more multifaceted concepts and structure such as genre formulas and archetypes, interconnectivity, satire, character, theatricality, ensemble sketches, comedy revue structure and writing from a more personalized and truthful place.

We will look to sharpen sketch comedy skills like writer collaboration, editing, rewriting, and how to heighten a scene so that it enhances the writer's unique creative voice. Class will involve more interactive exercises, readings, scene deconstructions, and take-home 2 assignments to expand the skill set, increase your understanding and further build the student’s portfolio of material.

The class will culminate in a graduation show performance at The Voodoo Comedy Playhouse for friends and family.

Maximum of 16 participants per class. Pre-requisite: Voodoo Sketch Comedy Writing Level 1

Sketch Lab will focus on writing, editing and preparing original, multi-character sketches for practical production. Emphasis will be on developing unique, original material and to continue to develop unperformed work from Sketch Levels 1 & 2 as well as the nuts and bolts of assembling a professional 60-minute sketch performance. Students will work together to produce an original sketch comedy show to be performed at the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse. The process will be broken down into thirds. 1/3 will consist of writing, 1/3rd rehearsal and the last 3rd will culminate in a multiple performance run at the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse, dates to be determined. The lab is open to any student who has completed the Sketch Writing 1 & 2 courses.

Prerequisite: Sketch Writing Levels 1 & 2
