Public Speaking Tips: 3 Powerful Tips

Public Speaking Tips | Voodoo ComedyDenver,Colorado – Whether you’re an introvert, an extrovert, love public speaking or feel sheer terror at the thought of a presentation, or giving that maid of honor speech – we’ve got a few tips that will help set you up for success.

As an improv organization, not only do we step on stage every night to perform in front of an audience, (eagerly waiting to be entertained), but we work with organizations all over the Denver area, helping their staff become more confident presenters (Presentation Skills Workshop – Denver).

Here are a few tips you can apply the next time you step in front of a crowd:

Public Speaking Tips:

1) Posture and breathing
Regardless of how you’re feeling inside, strike a confident pose before you hit the stage and continue with it once you are there.  You’ll be surprised at how effective that one simple act is at making you feel more in control. Posture and body language are very important when presenting.Stand up straight, make eye contact, and be mindful of your hands (no fidgeting or hand wringing).

You’ll experience the sensation of feeling ultra-confident and petrified at the same time!

(oh, and take a second before your first words and breathe… while gently scanning the room and letting eye contact happen naturally and gracefully. You’ll feel a sense of comfort and so will your audience. It’s a nice moment for everyone and reduces anxiety for both sides).

2) Slow is the way
Chances are the last speech or presentation you gave had a pretty fast clip to it. It’s natural for people to talk a little faster than normal when it’s go time… the adrenaline is up, and you’re trying to get through it as quickly as possible. Fight this urge. Fight it hard.

Not only will the audience notice right away if you’re on double time with your speed, but it makes it difficult for the audience to digest the content, tramples all over inflection and comes off as anxious.

Force yourself to slow down, take pauses, breathe, and let the room go on the journey with you… rather than thinking of it as a task you need to quickly fly through to get to the end.

Slow is the way.

3) Don’t stick to the script
Firstly, you need to be prepared to feel confident enough to go off-script, but once you’ve looked after the prep work, your presentation is going to benefit immensely from you being present, engaging with the audience and being in touch with what’s happening right in front of you – how is audience reacting, are there opportunities to interject with an anecdote that is “of the moment”, not something pre-prepared?  Look up, make eye contact, watch for reactions and embrace the unpredictable in front of you. It’s engaging and will connect you to the audience.

Feeling comfortable going “off script” and embracing the unpredictable are areas we cover when we work with groups.

And remember to also just be yourself. Even if you’re not a “natural” (few people are), show up prepared and ready to engage the audience and you’ll be a hit.

If your group is looking for as fun, but impactful workshop focused on public speaking and presentations (Presentation Skills Workshop – Denver)reach out and we can discuss.

Company Holiday Party Tips – Surviving the Party Season

Company Holiday Party Tips | Voodoo ComedyDenver, Colorado – You name it, we’ve probably seen it when it comes to company holiday parties. As a group that spends a lot of the holiday season performing our customized improv shows at these parties (Corporate Entertainment in Denver), we have a front row seat. And with that front row seat comes experience on how one can successfully navigate these events. Here are a few company holiday party tips from us improvisers.

Tip #1) Overindulgence – as in don’t

You knew this one was coming and here it is. You don’t need to perform at a bunch of company holiday get-togethers every year to have a few anecdotes about an employee who was the talk of the party – for all the wrong reasons.

Go easy on the open bar and you’ll never regret it.

Pace yourself, swap out a drink or two with water, leave the doubles for another time. And if you are looking to really let loose that night, wait until your next stop, after you’ve left the party your source of income is tied to.

Tip #2) Dress the Part

Whether there’s a theme (e.g. ugly holiday sweaters), or a suggested dress code (semi-formal, formal, etc.), make note before the party, check-in with co-workers on what they’re up to and take that route. Hoodie guy (and it’s always a guy) sticks out at those suit and gown dinners.

Tip #3) Mingle

Ever been to a party populated by small groups huddled together with tons of space in-between – and rarely do they intersect? Yeah us too.

At this year’s party, break-free and connect with colleagues who you might not otherwise get a chance to spend time with. Maybe they work on another floor, in another department, another location – whatever. Make a point of leaving the comfort of familiar faces you hang with every day, and boldly branch out. You’ll be glad you did.

Tip #4) Leave on a high note

Like George Constanza – head out on a high note. Don’t be the last one out the door (that can often mean you didn’t adhere to Tip #1).

Now this doesn’t mean you should bolt early, but there is a sweet spot for exits. Find it, and head for the coat check. You’ve never going to wish you’d stayed for that last round of shots, last spin on the dance floor, last run at the karaoke machine, etc.

There you have it. A few tips to help you navigate the seasonal fun.

Happy Holidays!

Improv Training for Leaders – Why Every Manager Should Take an Improv Class!

Improv Training for LeadersDenver, Colorado – What does improv training for leaders look like? With us, through our Corporate Workshops here in Denver, it looks like learning those core skills every manager should be working on – communication skills, collaboration skills, presentation skills, empathy, being an agile leader and being a leader that creates an environment of support and inclusiveness.

Who wouldn’t want to work with, and for, that person?

A recent CNNMoney from Kathryn Vasel highlights the value in companies including improv-based corporate workshops as part of their leadership development curriculum.

The article, titled Why every boss should take an improv class, follows up with several organizations who’ve introduced improv-based corporate training to their staff, with the goal of not only connecting teams (Team Building Workshops are always very popular), but providing each individual with skills and techniques that will help them be better leaders. Whether attendees are currently in a leadership position, or aspire to be.

Some of the quotes from these sessions include:

“So much about leadership isn’t about the answer, but asking the right questions. These improv sessions really get folks comfortable with not having all the answers and being able to think on the fly and also stop and start listening to better understand.”

“Improv can make communication in high-pressure situations easier,”

“We got to know each other on a human level, which helped us collaborate,” said Ken Bazydola from iRobot, after he organized an improv session for a team that are rarely ever in the same room together (working from home offices all over the world).

These sessions set up perfect for teams that are geographically separated, or spend a majority of their time working remotely.

Give the article a read when you get a chance – Why Every Boss Should Take an Improv Class! and you can read more from Kathryn by checking out her Twitter account @KathrynVasel.

OnBoarding New Employees

Denver, Colorado – When onboarding new employees, let us help speed up the process of connecting them to their colleagues, your organization and your overall company culture.

“The only thing better than hiring a great employee, is keeping them”

Improving onboarding for new employees can be a daunting task – one that is always on the “to-do” list, but is also easy to avoid. That said, making changes in this area doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. Even small adjustments can be easy to maintain and have a big impact on new hires, and for your organization

Let’s face it, all too often the onboarding process can be a bit of a drag. Rather than being a fun, invigorating introduction to the team and organization, it’s filled with paperwork, maybe a video or two, policy overviews, forms and quick hellos to a blitz of new faces.

As many studies have shown, this initial phase is a critical time for a new staff member. Why not set it up for success.

We can design a customized onboarding component for your company that is highly effective at starting new hires with an engaging, interactive experience that makes them feel a part of the team, while having a lot of fun in a supportive, positive setting.

It’s designed to create an immediate sense of belonging that is vital for engagement.

Whether you have a formalized “Onboarding” program, or your process of integrating new employees is less formal, we can seamlessly integrate with your approach.

Our “Onboarding” program is:

  • cost-effective
  • impactful
  • memorable
  • and meaningful to your new hires

It’s a staff perk with a purpose – connecting new employees to each other and to the larger organization. It has the added benefit of positively impacting your existing staff as well.

Our session(s) become a part of their story; a shared experience they’ll fondly remember while setting them up to successfully collaborate, communicate and see how they’ll be supported by colleagues, as well as a template for them to be a supportive member of the team.

If you’re looking to give your onboarding of new employees a boost, connect with us to find out more.

4 Brainstorming Tips – Using Improv

Brainstorming TipsTips to Super-Charge your Brainstorming Sessions

You set the meeting, gather everyone in the room and sit back ready for the creative magic to happen – except it doesn’t. Been there, done that.

Not only can a typical brainstorming session end up being a waste of time, but invariably, if these sessions are often unproductive, there’s a good chance they’re a reflection of a strained team culture, and they’re contributing to a cycle of negative interaction.

Here are 4 brainstorming tips you can use in your next session to unblock the flow of ideas – (while also helping build a stronger, more supportive team).

Brainstorming Tip #1) Define Goals and Identify the Problem

This one isn’t specifically an improv-based strategy, but we’ve found it to be an important first step to set-up a successful brainstorming session.

Before the meeting (and not five minutes before…more like a day in advance), send everyone a clear outline that lays out the purpose of the session. What’s the focus? What problem are you trying to solve? Ask the team to challenge the premise of the problem (question the question).

Brainstorming Tip #2) Saying Yes is Great…Saying “Yes, and” is Better

You knew it was coming. The concept of “Yes, and” is foundational in the world of improv and it should be the cornerstone to every brainstorming session.

First, everyone in that room needs to be ready to say “yes”. Saying yes to ideas gets you moving. It’s the acknowledgement and acceptance of an idea, and sets up an environment of support.

With “yes”, as the acceptance of an idea, the “and” becomes the force multiplier – it’s the building upon an idea. All brainstorming needs a “Yes, and” approach to be effective. Not every idea is going to be one you keep, but you’ll be pleasantly surprised where “Yes, and” takes you.

(“Yes, and” is an activity we focus on when we work with clients in the area of Team Building – Team Building in Denver).

Brainstorming Tip #3) Save Critical Thought for a Later Date
No one wants to spend time in a meeting, let alone a brainstorming session with the “No, but” person (or even “Yes, but” person for that matter)

It’s very natural for many people to immediately apply critical thought to a new idea. And there’s a time and place where real critique will be needed…that time isn’t during the brainstorming session.

Don’t critique an idea before giving it some airtime and building on it. Being critical right out of the gate not only undermines any chance of that idea reaching its full potential, but it also creates an environment where team members become self-conscious, hold back, feel uninspired and unsupported – shutting down the flow of ideas.

Save the critiquing for stage two (or three).

Brainstorming Tip #4) There are no mistakes

Pretty straight-forward. Don’t self-edit. Let the ideation flow without feeling there’s a wrong suggestion, or contribution. Go for it.

There you have it. With these tips, brainstorming will be a meeting your staff looks forward to. And just as importantly, they’ll lead to great ideas that elevate your organization.

Presentation Skills Workshop – Denver

Presentation Skills WorkshopDenver, Colorado – Whether you’re delivering a sales presentation, running a marketing meeting, pitching a new product to management, or addressing your team in a weekly meeting – an improv-based Presentation Skills Workshop will help you succeed in any presenting scenario.

As an organization that creates Presentation Skills Workshops, we have a lot of experience honing in on the key skills, tips and techniques that have an immediate impact.

If you are doing some research, you’ll likely notice a common thread pretty quickly in the Presentation Skills workshops offered – all of them, at some level, will be teaching you the rules and techniques of improvisation. As an improv theatre company, these are skills that we use as the foundation for our corporate workshops (and put on display every night on the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse stage – Improv Theatre in Denver).

Areas we focus on in our customized Presentation Skills Workshop include:

  1. Thinking on your feet: an important skill in any presentation setting, but this is particularly valuable in the sales sector.  Being comfortable “going off script” and truly reacting in the moment, handling questions and objections comfortably and confidently and creating authentic interactions can be a game-changer.
  2. Connecting with your audience. Quickly building rapport with an audience is what we do every night on stage. It’s also an important part of presenting, whether you’re speaking to one person, or 700.
  3. Telling your story. Knowing how to craft a story and have your message hit home when presenting is an invaluable tool. Emotion creates a connection and telling a compelling story is what will drive those positive emotions.

As well as:

  • Expressing ideas clearly and confidently.
  • Handling the unexpected
  • Becoming more self-aware when presenting
  • Active listening and being in the moment
  • Projecting confidence in any situation

These skills and more are covered in our presentation skills workshops. Not only will your team leave with a number of real takeaways they can use in their professional (and personal) lives, but they’ll have a lot of fun.

Corporate Workshops in Denver

Corporate Workshops in Denver We love creating impactful corporate workshops in Denver (and throughout the State) with organizations of all sizes, from a wide variety of sectors.

“a superb job putting on a workshop for my team…. every single person was talking about how much they enjoyed the experience…so fun, educational, though-provoking, empowering…my team is better because of it.”
– Patrick Borus, Chipotle Mexican Grill

Whether it’s helping build stronger teams (increasing collaboration and effective communication), improving a sales team’s ability to deliver presentations and think on their feet, creating a culture that is agile, managing change and embracing the unpredictable, or a focus that is unique to your group, we have the experience to design a corporate workshop that produces results, based on your vision.

We had a group coordinating changes across policies, processes, tools, and culture, and we were looking for a group activity that would enable us to have fun while also reinforcing how best to work with multi-functional, large-scale groups. After spending time talking with Steve, we knew he understood how to take these concepts and translate learning into fun activities. We certainly did not know what to expect, and our team was a mixture of folks who were “very nervous” and “can’t wait to get started.” Everyone learned something and were still talking about it the next day.
– Leann Dittman, Comcast Cable Services

(Learn more about our corporate workshops in Denver, including our popular Unique Team Building Workshop package)

As we did with Leann at Comcast Cable Services and Patrick with Chipotle, we consult with our clients prior to our corporate workshops, gathering information about their team, their vision, goals, etc.

Using this information we design your workshop, which will usually be two to three hours (although we can customize for other lengths of time).

Your team will have a great time together, sharing a lot of laughter, as you learn new ways to collaborate, create, communicate, innovate, support each other, etc. working with us in these interactive sessions.

“Thanks for an incredible event! Really rave reviews from the team.”
– Dan Frailey, RuMe

Team Building Activities in Denver (or a Team Outing?)

Team Building Activities in DenverLooking for Team Building Activities in Denver, or are you seeking more of a Team Outing?

Is there a difference you may ask?

Well, actually yes there is.

Both are definitely in the same neighborhood, but quite distinctly on different streets.

First let’s start with the similarities:

  • Both team building and a team outing can add a lot of value for a group.
  • In most instances, the organizer wants the experience to be fun, on some level, for their group.
  • Most team outings are centered around an activity in which the social component is a main focus (organized time spent together).

Think bowling, catching a ball game, painting class, rock climbing, go-karting, trampoline park (for the more adventurous and active teams), or wings, drinks and Monday night football. The goal of connecting the group by spending time together in a recreational setting (i.e. out of the office) can be accomplished in an unlimited number of ways.

Team Building Activities

While again there is certainly an overlap, most team building activities have a different approach. The goals and benefits are structured into the activity (and facilitated by experienced professionals).

We do a lot of Team Building activities in Denver with groups that were initially seeking more of a team outing experience. However, after talking with the organizer, it’s very common to discover that the outcome they were looking for is more suited to a team building activity.

A team outing (or multiple team outings) can be a lot of fun and help connect a group, but they’re not specifically designed to provide techniques, strategies and a template that fundamentally increases the way a team collaborates, communicates and supports each other.

(Check out more info on our Team Building workshops – Unique Team Building in Denver)

Here at Voodoo Comedy Playhouse, we design team building workshops that definitely check the “fun” box, while engaging your group during a customized session that focuses on your team dynamic – from strategies to increase the way you collaborate with each other, as well as across departments, to unleashing your group’s ability to innovate and create together, to techniques that will shift the way everyone communicates with each other, all leading to a more productive, supportive, happier team.

Again, these are facilitated workshops custom designed to your team and workplace.
