Class Runs: Saturday afternoons 3:00 – 6:00 PM, Sat 11/16 – Sat 11/23 (2 classes total)
Instructor: Katie Matthews
Sometimes in improv, we feel stuck under the weight of choices that we aren’t sure how to explain. It can look like a broad, general statement that feels too big to play, an unexpected gift that blindsides us, or something so fantastic or “out there” that we just plain don’t know what to do with it! Confusion sets in and our scene hits the mud. Learn to apply tools you already have to help yourself out in these situations through the magic of justification. This class will focus on informing yourself and your scene partners to facilitate understandable and relatable improv that feels easy and instills confidence!
Katie Matthews is an improviser from Denver, CO. Currently an instructor at Voodoo Comedy and regular coach of independent teams, her teaching and performance style is based in honest, relatable characters that use self-based truths, vulnerability, and relationship to drive a scene forward, and she brings this perspective to each set, class, or coaching session. Katie lives and improvises by the phrase, “You are enough.”
She began improvising in the long-form and short-form styles with Monkey Butler Denver and later studied at Grafenberg Productions in Denver, CO, where she also worked as Managing Director, taught long-form improv, and produced and performed in numerous shows, including SYP Awesome Improv Show, Genre-ly Speaking, Writer’s Block, and Relationsh!t. She firmly believes you never stop learning in improv and seeks out every opportunity to continue doing so through workshops, classes, and opportunities to play with new improvisers.
Katie has performed with The Notorious V.A.G. at the Denver Improv Festival and Omaha Improv Festival, as well as Katie & Chris at the Countdown Improv Festival. Katie will be performing with Katie & Chris and Barkley at the 2019 Denver Improv Festival. Katie can be seen regularly performing a variety of improv styles and formats in Denver with Barkley, Metalica, and Katie & Chris in their currently running shows at Voodoo Comedy.
