Circo de Nada invites you to a preview and fundraising event for Henry Four: The Shadow of Succession on August 17th. Please join us at the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse for a sneak peak at key scenes, glimpses into the backstage magic of shadow puppetry, and the first fifty attendees get a free glass of sherry (sponsored by the Voodoo!) Proceeds will benefit the full production in Denver and Portland, OR, set for 2018.
The full production features a small ensemble cast, playing dozens of roles against a backdrop of simple muslin curtains. The locations are projected as shadows. Balinese-style shadow puppets help tell the story of these two enormous plays in a single performance. The interplay between shadow and live action is at the forefront, as Hal shadows his mentor, rival and father, and they transform into his shadows when he ascends the throne.
The two actors who play the four principle roles will be at our preview event. Nick Trotter portrays the careworn King Henry as well as the hilariously dissipated Falstaff. Amy Driesler, flying in from Portland to be with us, plays both the heir to the throne, Prince Hal and his swashbuckling rival, Harry Hotspur.
There will be demonstrations of the shadow puppetry and performances by Trotter and Driesler showing how the puppetry and live action is melded. Director Laura Livingston, who has come in from New York City for our preview, will be on hand for a discussion of the production history and the plans for the 2018 production.
AND the first fifty people (over 21) at this preview event get a FREE GLASS OF SHERRY! (Falstaff’s favorite drink!) Sponsored by the Voodoo Comedy Playhouse!
